Dave King

Dave graduated from Houston Broadcast Academy in 1968. After a brief stint with his hometown radio station in Artesia, New Mexico, he came to Lubbock and attended Lubbock Christian University.

His part time job at KSEL radio turned into full time. Being a DJ was fun but radio station management wanted him to spend more time writing and producing radio commercials. He became KSEL’s production manager and wrote and produced commercials for hundreds of Lubbock businesses. During his time at KSEL, he worked with many legends of Lubbock broadcasting including, Bill McAlister and Lew Dee, Dirk West, Oscar Love, Jim Dandy and many others.

After marrying Gail in 1971 he applied his production talent to a new endeavor, radio sales. He produced commercials for his clients and found success in his new sales career.

In 1975, Dave went to work at KLBK radio in full time sales. Then in 1977 he entered KLBK TV sales. He was the first to fully utilize the new, portable camera and videotape invention to produce “on-camera-on location” commercials for clients. Dave appeared “on-camera” for several clients as a spokesperson. Response to this new kind of TV commercial was tremendous and his sales skyrocketed. In 1980 Dave set an all-time sales record for any media salesperson in Lubbock. In 1981 he became local sales manager of KLBK TV.

KLBK TV was locally owned but sold to a corporate media interest in 1982. Dave left to open the Advertising Agency in April 1983 with his former boss and friend, Chuck Spaugh. Advertising Agencies come and go but King & Gibson is still going strong and is now one of the oldest Ad Agencies in Lubbock.
